If you’ve ever been burned by a data cap, you already know the feeling. The bill shows up, the overage charge is on it, and nobody in the house can tell you where the data went. Streaming is almost always where it went. Here’s a plain-language guide to how much data video and music actually chew through, so you can do the math for your own house instead of guessing.
One thing before the numbers: these are ballpark figures. Every service compresses video a little differently, and the apps adjust quality on the fly based on your connection. Treat these as “close enough to plan with,” not gospel.
Video, per hour of watching
Standard definition (SD) is the old DVD-ish quality. Figure roughly 1 GB per hour. Most phones default to something in this range when you’re on cellular, which is why your phone plan survives longer than you’d expect.
High definition (HD, 1080p) is what most TVs and laptops actually play. Figure around 3 GB per hour. This is the workhorse number. If you only remember one figure from this post, remember this one.
4K (Ultra HD) is the big one. Figure somewhere around 7 GB per hour, sometimes more with HDR. A 4K TV will happily pull 4K whenever the service and the connection allow it, whether or not anyone in the room can tell the difference from across the couch.
So one person watching a two-hour movie in 4K uses about as much data as fourteen hours of SD. Same movie. Same couch. Wildly different appetite.
Music, podcasts, and video calls
Music streaming is light. Even at high quality settings you’re looking at a small fraction of a gigabyte per hour. You could stream music all day, every day, and it would still be a rounding error next to one evening of 4K.
Podcasts are lighter still. Spoken audio compresses well.
Video calls land in between. A one-on-one HD call runs somewhere around 1 GB per hour, give or take, and group calls with lots of video tiles run higher. If someone in your house works from home on camera all day, that adds up to real usage over a month, though still nothing like a nightly 4K habit.
Do the math for your house
Here’s the useful part. Take a normal evening at your place and add it up.
Say two kids are each watching HD on their own screens (about 6 GB per hour combined), the living room TV is playing something in 4K (call it 7 GB per hour), and somebody’s got music going in the kitchen (barely counts). That household is pulling roughly 13 GB every hour, and a three-hour evening of that is close to 40 GB. Every night. A month of evenings like that clears a terabyte without anyone downloading a single file.
No scolding here. That’s ordinary modern life, and it’s exactly what a good connection is for. But it explains a few things:
Why capped plans hurt. Cellular hotspots and some satellite plans meter your data. Run the math above against whatever cap you’re living under and you’ll see why the overage charges show up. A cap that sounds generous on paper can disappear in a couple weeks of ordinary family streaming.
Why “it worked fine last year” stops being true. TVs default to higher resolutions than they used to, and services push 4K when they can. Your habits didn’t change. The per-hour appetite did.
One practical lever you control. Most streaming apps let you cap playback quality in the settings. If you’re stuck on a metered connection, dropping the bedroom TV from 4K to HD cuts that screen’s usage by more than half, and on a smaller screen you likely won’t notice. It’s the single biggest data-saving move available to a normal household.
Where fiber and fixed wireless fit

But knowing the numbers still helps you troubleshoot.
