About Cordell

Around Cordell.

Worth a stop

The Washita County Courthouse anchors the town square and is worth a slow lap. After a fire took the original building in 1909, the county rebuilt it by 1911 with the firm of Solomon Layton, the same architect behind the Oklahoma State Capitol, and former Governor George Nigh once called it the godfather of all Oklahoma courthouses.

A little history

Cordell got its start in 1892 after the Cheyenne and Arapaho lands opened, named for Wayne W. Cordell, a longtime postal employee in Washington, D.C. In 1897 the town moved about a mile and a half to a spot with better water, which is why the new site became New Cordell, and it won the county seat from Cloud Chief for good in 1906.

Mark the calendar

Every October the Cordell Pumpkin Festival and Car Show fills the historic downtown square with a vendor market, a parade, a baking contest, and a burnout contest.
